Rhythm & Rest
For the FIGMENT FESTIVAL 2009 on Governors Island, ANIMUS will be creating a sculptural, interactive art project. The piece will be marked by elegance and simplicity, yet maintain a power presence and thoughtfulness. Evocative of a large scale, three-dimensional, infinity sign, this project would be an exploration of the interruption and continuation of space. RHYTHM AND REST would stand a little over 8 feet tall and about 20 feet long, and with three separate seating areas, you have a visual “infinity, plus one” which is both a childhood “one-upping”, as well as a complex mathematical construct.
The structure will be made out of Douglas Fir wood. Connecting each side of the wood frames together will be wooden dowels, essentially mimicking the way a ladder works were laid down on its side. Where people would sit, the “rungs” would be bunched up together to create a comfortable seating area. As you moved up the curve, the rungs would spread out, allowing for the light and shadow to interplay depending on where you sat. People would be encouraged to sit, recline, and explore the piece at will. Its poetic structure will be a beacon to the island’s attendees all summer long.
Rhythm & Rest will be located on Governors Island until October 11, 2009.
